Behavioral Health Furniture Project Case Study: Mercy Hospital
Mercy Hospital has been a cornerstone of healthcare in the Miami/Dade County community for over 60 years. In 2011, as part of the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) family, Mercy Hospital received the Magnet™ award for quality patient care and nursing excellence. The hospital, a 437-bed full-service facility, re-opened its in-patient psychiatric unit in 2011 due to increasing demand for behavioral health services.
Project Goals and Philosophy
Mercy Hospital’s Behavioral Health Unit aims to be the best-practice behavioral health facility in South Florida. The goal is to create a therapeutic environment that integrates natural design elements and provides comprehensive mental health services, including tri-lingual acute inpatient psychiatric care and specialized therapy programs.
Furnishing Needs and Solutions
Behavioral Health Furniture Requirements:
The furniture for behavioral health units at Mercy Hospital needed to be extremely durable, safe, and hygienic, suitable for a diverse patient population including geriatric patients. The selection process focused on patient safety, comfort, and ease of maintenance.
Chosen Products:
Attenda® Series
The Attenda® floor-mount beds and deluxe nightstands were selected for their seamless construction, which deters contraband hiding and bedbug infestation, while providing exceptional durability and sanitization ease.

The Process:
Mercy Hospital’s team, led by the Director of Behavioral Health Services, collaborated with Wood Designs and Norix Group Inc. The team prioritized patient safety and comfort in every aspect of the furniture selection. Norix’s Attenda® series was chosen for its proven performance in psychiatric hospital furniture applications. The color palette, including the soothing Lagoon color, was carefully selected to harmonize with the hospital’s seaside views, creating a calming environment for patients.
Installation of Psychiatric Furniture:
Wood Designs coordinated the logistics and installation, ensuring that the delivery of behavioral health furniture was seamlessly integrated into the hospital’s daily operations.
