The recently completed Goose Creek prison in Alaska achieved its principal goals of erecting a modern corrections facility to house the state’s inmates within their home-state – keeping construction jobs, corrections careers, and release programs locally-focused.

In a video produced by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough government (referred to as Mat-Su),  there is a tour of the new corrections facility as well as commentary by the Mat-Su Borough Manager, the design-build contractor, the Borough’s Project Manager, a Mat-Su Assembly Member, and an Alaska State Senator, each offering background information and describing the project’s goals and successes. All are lauding the fact that the public building project was completed on time and within budget.

In the video, a member of the community, who is also the mother of an inmate, talks about how important it is to her to have her son nearby where she can visit him. Without local prison facilities, inmates were routinely sent to out-of-state prisons – a topic of much discussion between corrections officials, state and local governments.

The Goose Creek Correctional Center is set to be fully operational by July of this year. You can view more than 60 images of the new prison facility at the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman. The new prison was outfitted with Norix furniture and fixtures in the inmate’s cells, dayroom special management housing area, and the visitation waiting area (pictured).
